A friend of Eric and Arthur Murray at Merriam Academy in the mid-1980s. Killed at the Hell Hunt by the Briarhart, when Pasha Lovetts used Cary, Eric, and Arthur as a distraction to claim the Heartseed — abandoning them to the creature in the final moments.

Cary St. Clair's death is the source of Eric's deep and lasting grudge against Pasha. Arthur nearly died alongside them. The weight of Cary — someone who did not get to survive — sits between Eric and Arthur in ways that have never fully been named. Eric knows Pasha is now headmaster of Merriam Academy and has never looked further. Whether that restraint is grief, pragmatism, or something he is afraid to find is an open question.
