The Murray paternal line carries a pattern: for at least three generations, one twin has died per generation while the other has survived. Whether this is a curse, a deliberate external force, a bloodline's magical debt, or a terrible coincidence is unconfirmed. The "curse" framing is interpretive.
The informal name — the **Clan Murray Curse** — comes from those within the magical community who have noticed the pattern across generations.
## The Definition (Interpretive)
Those who use the "curse" framing describe it as follows: twins that witness the death of the other — typically the older being responsible for the younger's death in some way. This framing does not map perfectly onto every generation, which is either evidence against a governing pattern or evidence that the pattern is more variable than assumed.

## The Anomaly
The second generation — Arthur and Eric — is anomalous. Arthur was born first; Eric's umbilical cord was wrapped around Eric's neck, causing him to technically die in utero. Eric was resuscitated. Depending on how the curse is understood, one of two things is true:
1. The resuscitation broke the curse's mechanism, and both twins genuinely survived — making their generation an exception.
2. The curse considered Eric's moment of death sufficient, and "completion" was achieved even with the revival — meaning both twins have already paid something they may not know they owe.
Some who know the full picture argue that Eric's survival is exactly why the curse fell so cleanly on the next generation: a debt deferred is still a debt.
## Eva as Surviving Twin
Eva Murray is the third-generation survivor. She was eight when Asher drowned. She witnessed it. Asher was the older twin — older by moments.
What this means for Eva — whether she carries the pattern's weight consciously, whether it connects to the Heir phenomenon, and whether the pattern is truly over now that it has claimed Asher — is unresolved.
## The Framing Problem
The word "curse" implies an external agent. It is possible this is simply what it looks like when a certain kind of magical debt propagates through a bloodline. It is also possible that "simply" is doing too much work in that sentence.
